Kids Recipe Challenge Winning Recipe: 2nd Place!  Category: After school snacks, grades 1-3

Kalynna from Stoney Creek shared us with us her favourite after school snack. She says that kids will love this recipe, “because they can use their favourite fruit and their imagination!”

Make this snack in the morning and refrigerate it so it is ready for an after school snack. Or make it and enjoy it right away. Either way it will be a big hit with kids.

Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Makes: 3 servings

Tips

  1. Slice fruit into shapes that resemble face features. Use your imagination and place the fruit where you would like to create a funny fruit face.

  2. Try using low-fat granola for the hair for added crunch too.

  3. Try also using low-fat plain yogurt if desired and flavour it with honey or cinnamon.

  4. Use up fruit that you might have around. Store leftover cut up fruit from this recipe in the fridge and be sure to use it up as soon as possible.

Ingredients

Strawberry 2 berries

Pear

1/2 pear

Apple   3 apple slices
Blueberries

3 berries

Banana  1 banana (18 slices)
Low fat vanilla or fruit flavoured yogurt 1 1/2 cups (375 mL)

Directions

1. Wash hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Clean all countertops and equipment used for food preparation.

2. Gently rinse strawberries, pear, apple, blueberries and banana under cool running water. Slice the fruit this way:

  • strawberries: cut each strawberry into 3 slices, totalling 6 slices
  • pear – cut it in half; cut one half into 6 slices
  • apple – cut it into quarters; slice one quarter into 3 slices
  • banana – cut into 18 slices

3. Divide yogurt among 3 plates and spread to form a small circle.

4. For eat plate, place 6 banana slices across the top of each circle for the hair, 2 slices of strawberries each for the eyes, 2 slices of pears each for the ears, one apple slice for the mouth and one blueberry for the nose. Repeat for the other two yogurt plates.

5. Use a fork to dip the fruit in the yogurt and enjoy!
