2015 Kids Recipe Challenge winning recipe: 3rd place!


Teacher Pat, from Haileybury Public School, submitted this recipe on behalf of her class. Grabbing a handful of this trail mix is a great way to enjoy some sweet goodness. Sprinkle over yogurt or fruit. Check out bulk stores for a wide variety of ingredients.

Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Makes: 4 1/2 cups (1.125 L)

Tips

  1. Store at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
  2. You can add in ½ cup (125 mL) of chopped nuts such as walnuts, pecans and almonds for added healthy fats and fibre.

Ingredients

Dried banana slices 

½ cup (125 mL)  

Each sunflower and pumpkin (pepita) seeds

½ cup (125 mL)  

Pitted dates, chopped

1/3 cup (75 mL) 

Dried strawberries

1/3 cup (75 mL) 

Dried mango, chopped

1/3 cup (75 mL) 

Raisins

1/3 cup (75 mL) 

Dried apple slices 1/3 cup (75 mL)  
Dried apricot slices 1/3 cup (75 mL)
Dried cranberries or blueberries 1/3 cup (75 mL)
Chocolate chips (optional) 1/3 cup (75 mL)

Directions

  1. Wash hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Clean all countertops and equipment used for food preparation.       
  2. In a large resealable bag, combine banana slices, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, dates, strawberries, mango, raisins, apples, apricots, cranberries and chocolate chips (if using).
  3. For individual grab and go servings, put ½ cup (125 mL) of the trail mix into small resealable bags.
